MDI joined SpiTrex to continue that legacy while expanding our capabilities as a global group. Located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, SpiTrex MDI brings decades of orthopedic manufacturing expertise into a new era of innovation and excellence. Originally founded as MDI in 2012 by Ed and Mary Burton — whose deep industry roots trace back to the founding of HDJ Co. in 1962 and Specialized Medical Devices (SMD) in 1996 — this facility is built on generations of hands-on knowledge and a clear understanding of what works.

Today, SpiTrex MDI operates as a trusted partner in orthopedic implant and device manufacturing, driven by a close-knit team of CNC machinists, engineers and quality professionals who have worked together for more than 20 years. We remain family-oriented at our core, proudly continuing the Burton family’s leadership with Savannah Smucker, Vice President of Operations.
